William Morris:
decorative initials
4 min read · 17 sourced studies
A letter built as a compact field
Morris treated the initial as architecture rather than ornament applied afterwards. The letter, leaves and dark ground are drawn together so that the white counterform remains readable inside a dense square.
The studies preserve alternate states: pencil and ink trials, painted models and sharper proofs intended for reproduction. They are shown separately because each is a distinct design on the museum sheet, while every card points back to that complete source object.
Source and scope
The drawings are held by the Victoria and Albert Museum ↗. Fontast crops the individual designs for close study; incomplete boxes and captions are not counted as works.
Large drawings exceed 500 pixels in the museum scan. Smaller process studies are exported at a consistent preview size and clearly identified as studies.
